Living Simple

Whether it is now living in my parent's home, or one day as a wife in my own home, I love the challenge of living simply, without excessive amounts of furniture and stuff. It is something I always aspire to do, no matter where I may be living! As a realtor, I've seen how terrible cluttered, disorganized homes look and how hard they are to sell, and mostly, I just don't like clutter!

Because my family has fixed up many homes of various sizes, living simply is something we have often been forced to do. Lately we have been discussing housing a lot, so I've been thinking about one home we fixed up a few years ago. While it was only a 1300 square feet doublewide trailer (very small for a family of 7 with #8 on the way!), I really loved how organized it stayed and how easy it was to keep it clean. We lived in this home in 2005-2007.

I thought I would share the before & after pictures from this project. This trailer was in pretty bad shape when we bought it, but my mom is the absolute best at decorating and organization, so within weeks it looked brand new!

Our family's ultimate challenge of living simply is surprisingly used as our coffee table in our current home:This "coffee table" with "149 Madison Avenue New York City NY U.S.A." etched the side, was originally the crate that my grandmother's family had to pack ALL of their belongings into when they boarded a ship and immigrated from Germany. Remembering her family's simplicity inspires us to get rid of things we do not need! Just writing this entry makes me want to go clean out my closet!

Wow Meridith! The house looked so different after it was all fixed up! I could hardly tell that it was the same house. I always loved the coffee table,a very good reminder. Maybe we (I mean myself) should have something like that! Can't wait to see you! Kelsey

Wow, it does look so different redecorated!

And that's so cool that you have that crate to use as a coffee table!

This was a great post, I definitely agree with the living simple principle. That crate is really neat too, my family immigrated from Germany as well!

Beautifully done! Love the transformation.

You hit a chord close to my own heart when you talked about simplicity. I certainly don't hit as high as I aim, but I love the beauty of no clutter and having only useful things around me. :) Now....if only I could get my closet to reflect that!

Wow! What a beautiful home! Simplicity and organization are something that I constantly struggle with in my home. It's nice to see that it can actually be done. ;) The table made from your Grandmother's trunk is amazing! I hope that your family will be able to keep it for many generations.
