Election Results

We are very happy with the election results! McDonnell, Bolling, and Cuccinelli won by large margins. Just one year ago, Obama won Virginia by six percentage points. This year, due to a much-needed GOP sweep, the Republican candidates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General each won by roughly 12-16 percentage points! This uncharacteristic swing is a reflection of the voters' lack of approval of Obama's radical policies. In conjunction with the GOP's surprising gubernatorial win in traditionally liberal New Jersey, this could potentially cause a backlash against Obama's destructive agenda.
Yesterday afternoon we worked the polls, handing out sample voting cards to voters as they entered the precinct. At our precinct, McDonnell won with over 70% of the vote. Last night, during our "victory party", Harrison asked in all sincerity if McDonnell would have won without our support. ;) He's so cute.
Sullivan and Harrison watched the election results with great interest last night. I'm so glad they got to see their candidates win. This has been such a fun experience for all three of us.

I love your blog and enjoy reading it but I just have to say one thing.

I am a normally Democratic voter who voted for McDonnell and all of the Republican statements about how this is all about Obama is driving me nuts. It's not correct at all. McDonnell won because he was a better candidate then Deeds. He had a clear, concise platform that he logically and clearly got across to the voters. All Deeds did was mudslinging and had no platform at all beyond "vote for me because I'm not McDonnell." That is not good enough. It's not that there was a huge conversion of Democrats, it's that a lot of them didn't vote at all. (there was some obviously, see my above statement- but I can tell you my conversion had nothing at all to do with my feelings on Obama) Our state is in huge financial troubles and Northern Virginia in particular is tired of all our tax money going to other parts of the state while our roads have potholes the size of swimming pools. McDonnell has plans and he's from our neck of the woods, so people liked that.

Exit polls in Virginia and New Jersey showed that 70% of voters said Obama had nothing to do with their votes, and out of the remaining 30% half strongly supported Obama and half stongly didn't. I doubt that the 15% that said Obama had to do with my vote and I disagree with him were any of the people who voted for him, nor any of the independents or swing voters. They are the conservatives that have disagreed with him from the beginning. That does not speak of any large conversion effort.

The republican win was because the republican party had better candidates who campaigned better. That is a good sign for 2012 because it shows that the RNC learned from past mistakes (campaigns solely based on mudsliging and fearmongling with no stated platforms) but none of that has to do with some overall statment on Obama.

Hey Meredith! It looks like you guys had a great time learning [and teaching] about the political process in your community. I've had some great experiences myself this year. It's encouraging to see what could be taken as a change of heart or mindset in our state of Virginia. Our nation has definitely had its head turned recently and has tried on some "new outfits" of worldview, culture, definition and reach of government, etc. I hope and pray that the Lord will use godly men to lead His people back to Him. Keep up the good work! p.s. If there's one thing this post brought you it's lengthy comments! ;)
