Here Comes the Bride

...In 230 days!My wedding ideas have been heavily influenced by one of my favorite books, Legendary Brides by Letitia Baldridge.
Grace Kelly looks so poised and dignified in her photos. I especially like how John F. Kennedy and Jackie Bouvier had a traditional ceremony followed by a very casual farm reception. I hope to follow their model and have a classy, elegant ceremony followed by a very casual, outdoor reception on our farm.
I have decided that I am going to do my own wedding cake. After taking cake decorating classes over the past several months and learning how to do tiered cakes, plus with the experience of baking many cheesecakes for the restaurant for nearly four years, I feel like it is something I can handle. It will save us so much money and I just love the thought of doing my own cake. I will be making practice tiered cheesecakes over the summer, as well as preparing the real cake several weeks in advance (the cheesecakes freeze and thaw well; that is how the restaurant uses them) so it would not contribute to the last minute stress.
This past week, my mom and I enjoyed the rare treat of spending an entire day together running errands and doing wedding planning. We looked at churches, wedding veils, and discussed many little details.

We had lunch at The Cheesecake Factory, which brought to my mind memories of the last time we ate together at The Cheesecake Factory slightly over four months ago on my birthday. I remember we mostly discussed what we knew of Stephen and our preparations for his upcoming first visit. I was very hopeful at the time because I was so impressed by the little I knew about him through his correspondence with my dad, but there were still so many uncertainties and our prayers were just that the Lord would make His will very clear. As I sat in the same restaurant a few days ago, I reveled in God's wonderful faithfulness as I admired the gorgeous engagement ring sparkling on my finger!
Over the past several weeks I have corresponded with over twenty churches in my search for a sanctuary that will hold our number of guests. Very few churches allow non-members to use their facilities, but we were able to obtain special permission from a couple churches and have now narrowed it down to one in particular. We hope to firm up the details this upcoming week if we can secure the neighboring church's parking garage (it is downtown and the parking is extremely limited).
God has shown His presence beautifully in so many details-- from the way He orchestrated bringing us together, to the peace and clarity of His will in our courtship, and through many other details not even mentioned here, so I have confidence that He will make His leading very evident to us as we begin the planning process.
Soon I already need to be choosing my "save the date" cards and invitations! I don't know if most people buy them all together so they coordinate or if I can just buy the "save the date" cards now and then the official invitations in a couple months. I honestly always thought the "save the date" cards seemed to be a waste of money, but since our wedding is going to be near Christmas and a lot of guests will need to make travel arrangements, my mom and I decided it would be wise to have them. Following are a couple of my favorite formal invitation styles:
Do any former brides have suggestions as to where (online) one can find high quality, traditional, and economical invitations?
A December wedding is going to be a challenge because flowers will not be plentiful and the outdoor reception is going to be very weather dependent. We may have a reception hall as a back-up plan in case it is raining, freezing, or even worse, snowing. A few people have said that snow would be so beautiful, but seriously, around here if it snows it shuts everything down and most people hardly know how to drive in it. This is Virginia, not Colorado!
Of infinitely more importance than the church location, invitations, weather, and other minor details is the prayer that our wedding will be a blessing to our guests and that God alone will be glorified through our wedding day and entire marriage! I pray that our focus will be fully on the sacredness of the vows and the covenant we are making before God in the presence of our families and friends.
It is such an exciting time! I am so happy and in love with Stephen and in awe of God's faithfulness!

I had a hard time looking for invitations online. I thought it was difficult to get a good sense of the details, such as thickness and additional decorations, from an online picture. You might try looking at some invitation books in person, and then looking online to see if you can get a good price or design something similar that you like. They usually have invitation books at places like Hallmark and big bridal stores. Aren't uninterrupted mother-daughter days great? I just got to spend the day with my mom yesterday- also doing some special shopping :)
Everything sounds like it's coming along beautifully!

I got married on Dec 21st and we used poinsettias to decorate the sanctuary. I carried red and white roses (which were hard to find because of the Rose Parade) and my attendants carried dyed mums.

I got my invitations through www.rexcraft.com/ and they were economical and easy to deal with.

My dress was hand made and I had a simple veil. We had a late wedding and then a buffet afterwards in the fellowship hall of the church.

Good luck planning. Stephen sounds like a wonderful, intelligent man who will be wonderful husband.

I made the cake for our wedding. It was EXACTLY what we wanted at 1/3 of the price (4 tiers, enough to serve 150). I would recommend a few test runs first... it really helped me since the 10 days leading up to the wedding are especially hectic! As far as invitations go, we used Costco; the options were economical, and had many traditional styles.

I had a friend help me design my invitation then another friend print it at a local print shop. They both did trial runs for me to show me what they were like and help me to see what I liked. Also for flowers I used roses and you can get bulk flowers for cheap thru sams.com which was great! Just make sure you order your flowers early and just pick the shipping date...I'm so sorry about the church deal, I tried to find a church in Richmond too because I wanted to get married near my family but after fruitless effort for my number of guests or ridiculous costs I went with the church near where I'm living now....I'm sorry its such a pain, that was the hardest thing for me was getting a church. But God had it planned out best and we got a great deal and a beautiful place that was perfect and made for lovely pictures. Still at least you are looking more than six months in advance which helps and isn't as stressful! I'm sure your wedding will be a beautiful testimony of the Lord. Also I always thought Grace Kelly's wedding was just lovely and so romantic being a princess and all...

For Sarah's wedding, we brought a wedding kit from Michael's and made our own invitations and wedding programs. If we had not printed our own, we would have got the invitations and wedding programs here: www.annsbridalbargains.com - One thing we loved about this website, was that you can get free samples mailed to you. This was SO nice, since stuff can look different online. We also looked at David's Bridal, you can order samples from them too. Some of there invitations are a little more in price. I hope this helps!:)

Meredith,

I'll be praying that all of the wedding plans go well and that y'all will have good weather on that special day. :D

That's so neat that you are going to make your own wedding cake!

I want to wish you and Stephan happiness and joy as you walk through the journey of being engaged and then married in December.

It was wonderful to read your courtship story and how God brought the two of you together.

God is awesome!

Blessings,

Meredith,
Your wedding plans sound so lovely! For our wedding, I printed my own invitations...it was much less expensive, and even though the font wasn't embossed I chose a pretty font and they turned out great. There are all kinds of invitation kits you can get at Target, Michaels, or other craft stores. You can even buy ribbon in your wedding color to use with the invitations.
Also, instead of real flowers you could make your own silk flower arrangements.
I love your idea of making your own cake. You are so talented that I'm sure it will turn out beautifully.
I was so excited to read your email and plan to write back soon.

Love,
Leigha

Wow ~ I am in awe of your cake making skills! :) I love Mrs. Kennedy's wedding dress --- it's so elegant and just... timeless.

For our save-the-dates and invitations, I ordered everything from crane.com. They have "buy 75 or more, get 25 free" on particular invitations - including the most formal ecru option. It turned out to be a really good deal! They also have wonderful thick cardstock if you want to do your own invitations on a printer. :)

Our invitation set was this one:
http://www.crane.com/prdSellCC.aspx?NavName=NavShop&SubDeptName=Crane-Wedding-Promotion&Name=W45-Embassy-Ecru-Triple-Panelled-Invitation-Set

We had ecru tissue-lined envelopes & used Charter Roman font. I think the save the dates and invitations might have been the most enjoyable part of the wedding planning process! Playing around with the different fonts and styles was too fun! :) I was able to see samples at the Crane store nearby, so I knew exactly what I was getting. The customer service was great, especially when I realized 7 weeks before the wedding - as I was assembling the invitations - that I hadn't ordered the reception cards. !!!!!! I almost had a heart attack!!! They were able to get them printed and sent to me within two days, which was an absolute lifesaver.

I'd highly recommend Crane invites - our entire package (w/ save the dates) ran under $1,000. That included postage - the USPS has a really cute "two wedding rings" stamp that we used; 1 stamp was enough postage for each envelope package. Definitely take your invitations to a post office to be weighed to check the postage necessary for your invites --- I have several friends who got ALL of their invitations returned simply because they didn't use enough postage! What a nightmare!!!

Blessings,
Luci

Oh, I reread your post and see that you are concerned about the flower availability and outdoor reception in December. I got married in December, and had no problem finding poinsettias, roses, magnolia (leaves and flowers), or evergreen. Our reception was indoors, but we considered an outdoor reception with a heated party tent (the kind with the windows that looks almost like a building). You could also consider renting large outdoor patio heaters for the day...

Thanks for sharing and allowing me to enjoy all of this with you :) Much love sister....

Hi Meredith,
I have been reading your blog for quite some time but have never commented.
I am not sure what your wedding budget is, but my personal opinion is that it's not worth going into debt or spending thousands of dollars on a wedding. It will be just as beautiful (and even more special) if you do most everything yourself. I have some friends who have done their entire wedding themselves and it was just as beautiful as the weddings I've attended where they have spent $10,000+. I personally hope to spend $1000 or less on my wedding. I know that might sound crazy, but it can be done.
I know everyone has their own preferences and budgets, but the person that commented that their wedding invitations were just under $1000--that is extremely expensive. People are not going to know if you spend $100 or $1000 on your invitations. Honestly, most people will just throw them away after the wedding, except for your close friends or family. :)
Thank you for sharing some of your wedding plans. You will make a beautiful bride, Meredith!

I of course did not do save the date cards, because I did not really know about them when I got married! :) But I do know that a friend of mine made her daughters when she got married. It was a simple piece of card stock (1/2 or 1/4 of an 8x11 piece I think) and she typed it on the computer and printed it. Then she punched 2 holes in the top and tied a piece of ribbon to make a bow. They were simple, cute and served the purpose. And I know several people that have done their own invitaions pretty much the same way. The print might not be imbossed but if you choose a nice font you really don't notice it! I think the invitations should be one of the least expensive expences. I hope you get a church secured soon. And I kinda thought that you had a wedding dress already. You will make such a beautiful bride, not only on the outside but also deep inside! You have patiently waited on God to bring Stephen to you and that makes it all the more special! I love reading all of your post! Makes me so excited for you!

I got my invites from rexcraft. http://www.rexcraft.com/ They were great, and you can order a sample.

I did my own save the date cards, no need to have them printed too!

I made my veil and headpiece. Veils are SUPER easy and so much cheaper to do your own.

I would be very scared to have an outdoor reception in December. Please think of your guests comfort as far as heating!

Congratulations!

Hey Meredith! What a fun post! We bought our invitations from Hobby Lobby for 50% off and printed them ourselves. I think it ended up being $45 for 150 invitations. Also we are ordering our flowers from Sams. They were MUCH cheaper than the local florist. You can go by and pick up an order form to see what they have. (They were cheaper in the store than online.) Also most of the save the date cards that I have received have been a picture of the couple with a short message on it. You could probably order them from Walmart.com pretty cheap. Hope some if this helps! -Missy

Hey Meredith,
Since posting a comment yesterday, I remembered I thought of something else to tell you!;) We got the flowers for Sarah's wedding form Costco, we also found that they were much cheaper then a local florist.
Also, www.theknot.com is a GREAT website if you need wedding ideas, local vendors, and you can get a free wedding website!:)

I know how much fun it was last year to plan Sarah's wedding! I am so excited for you and are wishing you the best with all your planing!=)

I totally agree about Grace Kelly's wedding. She's the only movie star whose wedding I would want to imitate.

Grace and Jackie's dresses were so beautiful- and best of all, modest!

We bartered with a local printer for our invitations. We used a lot of barter for our wedding and ended up well well under $5k for our wedding and reception. (We lived in San Francisco too which is an expensive town.) With the farming etc, I might call a local print shop to see about bartering.
We thought about getting married in Christmas because the church would be decorated already so that's something to think about . (We ended up getting married at the Palace of Fine Arts in SF by or minister. Lots of tourists stopped and took pictures!)
Much happiness to you!

Meredith, what fun this time of life is for you. It reminds me of when Marie and Elizabeth got married. It truly is an unforgettable time for you and Stephen and you and your Mom. I like the book you are enjoying;lovely and inspiring ideas and pictures. Missy mentioned above that they used Hobby Lobby for their invitations and got them at 50% (they periodically have all their wedding items 50% off); we did the same when Marie and Elizabeth got married. we printed them ourselves and It was not very expensive that way, and still very lovely. You are very ambitious to attempt your own wedding cake, and I have no doubt you will do a wonderful job. Many Blessings

What lovely pictures Meredith! I so enjoyed reading all your exciting plans for the upcoming year. What a joy that you will be getting married in December. That time of year is so beautiful for a traditional wedding, very chic in my eyes. I so enjoyed reading about you and your mom having the whole day to do errands and lunch out. I have such happy memories with my mom planing and arranging all the delightful details of my wedding. Even the music we would listen to at that time brings back such warm memories.

Oh, the pictures you sent me and Elizabeth on facebook were so delightful Meredith! And so BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you so much dear friend.
Love you
--- Marie

I'm a long time reader, but I have never commented and now I just have to! I just rejoiced when I saw your great news! Congratulations! What a blessing marriage is!

When I got married we used this printer: http://www.jaffaprinting.com/wedding/wedding.htm

We had really traditional invitations and I was so pleased with the final result. They were on fairly heavy card stock, but not the super heavy card stock that increases the price so much. I think they'll send you samples in the mail.

Either way- God bless you and your beloved in this joyous time and in the many years to come!

If i've done my math right, it looks like you are getting married on a weekday. Was it just easier to schedule things that way? Does that date have a special meaning for you? Just curious since most brides marry on a Saturday or Sunday :-)

I think it's interesting that you decided to make your own wedding cake. Nearly 7 years ago when my husband and I got married, I made our wedding cake, and we decorated it together. We didn't have cheesecake, just a regular chocolate cake. It sure has been one of the memorable parts of our wedding reception. It was special because we did it. (I had decorated a lot of cakes prior to that.)

Ramona, she's not idealizing the marriages, just the wedding aesthetics. Nothing wrong with that.

Meredith, I recommend going through Costco's website for invitations (you don't need to be a member). The prices are great and so is the quality. You can order samples for cheap, which I recommend. They come in the mail quickly. Everyone at my wedding was very impressed with the quality of my invitations. I had glossy raised embossing for a steal, and envelopes are included.
